Uganda Wildlife Education Centre
Case for sponsored membership in ISIS
1. Please describe why your organization would benefit from ISIS membership; and how membership in ISIS would contribute to your organization’s conservation goals.
Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) exists to educate the public through conservation education, rescue/rehabilitation and breeding of endangered species and as such is very vital for her to provide information to the global community as source of knowledge and information sharing through established network of ISIS member institutions.
UWEC will be able to provide meaningful archival material for the future reference. Data accumulated on many individuals is more useful than information on a single individual of a species. By maintaining comprehensive information about all specimens held, meaningful analyses are possible.
UWEC hopes to improve the quality and quantity of its data recording by continuing to use the ISIS Animal Records Keeping Systems; and also provide staff with a clearer picture of how the ISIS works and why the entries made on Daily Reports are so vital on species Management perspective.
By continuing as a part of ISIS, UWEC hopes to maintain and transmit accurate information about the animal collection by documenting a complete history of each animal owned by or kept at our facility. And also subsequent institutions links for information sharing.
As a member of ISIS, UWEC is able to access genetic history (pedigree) and basic demographic information used in local and global species management. With species disappearing daily, UWEC in her breeding program is striving to maintain stable captive populations embodying the genetic representation needed for future release of animals into their native habitats.
We shall also have access to already available data for research and husbandry. As research depends on data, and ISIS member will provide information for developing and improving husbandry practices as referenced.
2. Please tell us why your organization in not able to meet the financial responsibility of joining ISIS on your own.
The sustainability level of UWEC is still below 100%. The World Bank project, which has been supporting our institution ended in 2008. UWEC is, however, moving in a positive direction with support from conservation partners like Cicinati Zoo, World Parrot Trust, American Animal Hospital, Little Silver Animal Hospital, Paradise Wildlife Park, National Zoological Gardens, Yokohama Zoo, Lory Park Zoo, Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association.
3. Please outline your plan for record-keeping.
A description is shown below on the information that will be extracted form the daily keeper report submitted to ISIS:
- Sex record male, female or unknown. May be written in format.
- Species taxonomic name is preferred, as it is more specific than common name – e.g. one species may have several different common names.
- ID records any identifying house names, band numbers, etc here.
- ARKS# record individual ARKS numbers or group IDs here – this information is essential for recording data against the correct individual/group on ARKS.
- Enclosure record the animal’s enclosure (if you are transferring the animal, record the original enclosure here and the new enclosure under Information/Notes).
Information/Notes include the following types of information:
1. Population information: Births, deaths, transfers. Accompanying this information should be parentage information, times of birth, shipment details, necropsy information etc.
2. Husbandry information: Changes in diet, enrichment schemes, training/conditioning, regrouping of animals, human interaction, hand-rearing information etc.
3. Medical information: Medical treatments, physical condition, injuries, faecal samples, vet checks, etc.
4. Animal information: Behavioural notes, reproductive behaviour, egg information, changes in group dynamics, pairing, identifiers, weights, lengths, etc.
5. Other information: Enclosure information, locations of animals within enclosure, weather. It is important for us to know exactly where the animals are in the Zoo

Case for sponsored membership in ISIS
1. Please describe why your organization would benefit from ISIS membership; and how membership in ISIS would contribute to your organization’s conservation goals.
We would benefit from a membership to ISIS due to the fact the variety of animals we receive into the rescue center is astounding, and having the ability to be part of a network in which we can exchange information on other institutions experiences with animals would be invaluable to us. Membership would contribute to our goals of providing a natural and safe recovery environment and husbandry while undergoing rehabilitation for release or re-homing of the animals.
2. Please tell us why your organization in not able to meet the financial responsibility of joining ISIS on your own.
We are a family run small corporation that is a public 501-c3 non profit and since 90% of all the animals coming into our care require rehabilitation for unknown lengths of time all of our funding goes to maintain adequate husbandry and health...not one person in this company receives reimbursement for anything we are a fully volunteer run so that we can focus our monetary funds direct to the animals.
3. Please outline your plan for record-keeping.
Our Record Keeping Plan will Consist of the various animals entry date , enclosure details, feeding, defecation, breeding, molting, etc etc notes and also any actions taken in regards to medical diagnosis and treatment than ending with outcome of animal (example Re-homed, Released or transfer and to where).
