MEETING THE NEEDS OF ZOOS AND AQUARIUMS WORLDWIDE
ISIS develops technical solutions to help our more than 800 member institutions
work together to collect and share knowledge on animals and their environments. Zoos, aquariums and related conservation organizations in more than 80 countries use ISIS software and systems to help them reach their conservation goals because ISIS is:​
​   Credible: Governed by an international Board of Trustees,
ISIS systems are best practice for zoo management
Experienced: On average, ISIS staff have more than 10 years
of information technology or zoo experience
Global: 14 languages are spoken in the ISIS offices
 
​Institutions that join ISIS have access to:
  • Best-practice animal management software to manage basic animal care, housing, medical history and studbooks for your entire animal population – terrestrial or aquatic
  • A pooled knowledgebase of basic biologic and medical information on more than 2.6 million animals – 10,000 species
  • Pooled best practices through data-sharing software and networking platforms
  • The ISIS Community Portal, which allows all of your employees to network with more than 20,000 zoological professionals in more than 800 zoological institutions worldwide
  • Exchange of information from ISIS through newsletters and other communication

ISIS membership criteria
 
The ISIS Board of Trustees may consider the following in evaluating new membership in ISIS.
 
Biological Institution Members (voting):
  1. Must be open to the public at regular hours
  2. Must register live animals of wild species on ISIS (not solely domestics)
  3. Must meet Board-set data currentness standard (90 days)
  4. Must sign an ISIS Membership Agreement
  5. Must pay annual dues and other fees current to the year
  6. Must record and share data on their entire live animal collection, excepting feedstock and research collections
Other Institutional Members (non-voting):
  1. Must register live animals on ISIS
  2. Must meet Board-set data currentness standard (90 days)
  3. Must sign an ISIS Membership Agreement
  4. Must pay annual dues and other fees current to the year
  5. Must record and share data on their entire live animal collection, excepting feedstock and research collections
ISIS is a member-based private nonprofit corporation. The ISIS Board of Trustees makes the final decisions about membership. Note that deliberate misrepresentation of animal information is grounds for termination of ISIS membership.

Zoological Associations Membership​
 
 Zoo and aquarium associations receive:
  • formal representation in ISIS
  • licensed use of ISIS software and access to data at their associations' offices
  • ISIS services and exchange of information from ISIS through newsletters and other communications

Sponsored Membership
   
Facilities that cannot afford to pay for ISIS membership may be eligible for a sponsored membership.

Membership in ISIS has three requirements
  • Payment of annual membership fee.
  • Sharing of current data about your collection in ISIS-accepted formats. Data must be current to three (3) months to remain in good standing.
  • Member's chief executive officer must sign the appropriate membership application and agree to abide by the requirements outlined in the ISIS Member Declaration.
